Air Canada revising its Basic and Comfort fares beginning January 3, 2025
On December 4, 2024 Air Canada announced it is revising some of the terms of its Basic and Comfort economy fare tickets. Detail of fare revisions:
Basic Fare Baggage: For its lowest-priced, Basic fare for North America and Sun routes, customers travelling on tickets purchased on or after January 3, 2025, will still be able to bring on board one small personal item, such as a purse or computer bag. But larger items, such as roller-board or duffel bags, or large backpacks, will have to be checked pre-security and standard fees of $35 for a first bag and $50 for a second bag will apply. Customers arriving at the boarding gate with ineligible carry-on items will be required to check this baggage for a $65 fee for each item.
Mobility aids, medical devices, and child strollers are exempt from carry-on charges for all customers. As well, Status members, Star Alliance Gold, and Aeroplan premium credit cardholders are entitled to one carry-on bag, and their other benefits will also continue to apply.
Customers who purchased a Basic fare ticket before Jan 3, 2025, will NOT be impacted by this change.
Basic Fare Seating: The new Basic fare will still include complimentary seat assignment at check-in for customers who have not paid a fee to select their seats in advance. However, beginning January 21, 2025, customers who wish to change their seat from the one generated at check-in will be required to pay a seat selection fee, determined by the new seat chosen. Status and credit card member benefits will also continue to apply.
For families or those requiring an assistant, Air Canada remains committed to seating these customers together as per its current policy, which also prioritizes seating travelling companions together. Status and credit card member benefits will also continue to apply.
All Aeroplan Elite Status, Star Alliance Gold, and premium Aeroplan Credit Card benefits continue to apply.
Comfort Fare Changes: Air Canada is also increasing the checked baggage allowance for customers travelling worldwide on its Comfort economy fare. Under the new structure, Comfort fare customers who purchase their tickets from January 3, 2025, onwards will be entitled to check two complimentary bags, where currently the fare permits only one checked bag.Air Canada has become the first Canadian airline to introduce facial recognition technology for boarding identification.
Following a test period, Air Canada has launched its Digital ID program on domestic flights from Vancouver International Airport.
Passengers can enroll through the Air Canada app. For those who prefer traditional methods, boarding remains available using physical ID and boarding passes.
Digital identification is readily used to unlocking phones and entering workplaces, bringing this technology to the gate enhances the travel experience, making boarding flights convenient and effortless. The feedback from frequent flyers during the pilot phase was very positive.
Air Canada plans to expand this technology to additional airports.Faster Boarding: Passengers can confirm their identities within seconds at a camera-equipped gate, avoiding the need to present physical IDs or boarding passes.
Enhanced Security: The system uses secure biometric technology, with participation entirely optional and based on consent.
Streamlined Lounge Access: The program also extends to select Maple Leaf Lounges and the Air Canada Café in Toronto, and there are plans for further expansion.
Air Canada says the program is not linked to government initiatives like NEXUS or Global Entry. Enrollment and participation are entirely voluntary, and strict privacy measures protect biometric and personal information.
Senate probes airlines' seat-selection revenue
Five U.S. airlines combined to bring in $12.4 billion in seat-selection revenue between 2018 and 2023, making it their second-largest source of ancillary revenue behind bag fees. The figure, released in a Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations report, is the first public disclosure of seat-selection revenues since airlines began collecting such fees in 2006.
Southwest Will Be Ending Its In-flight Service Earlier — Here’s Why
Southwest Airlines will start landing procedures at a higher altitude, requiring travellers to fasten their seatbelts and put away laptops and tray tables earlier in the flight.
As part of the new policy, flight attendants will now start preparing the cabin for landing at 18,000 feet instead of the previous 10,000 feet in an effort to “reduce the risk of in-flight turbulence injuries for our Crew Members and Customers. As part of those preparations, passengers must return their seats to an upright position, fasten their seatbelts, put away large electronic devices, and stow seat-back trays. This also means in-flight service will end earlier. The new policy went into effect on Dec. 4.
REMINDER TO ALL TRAVELLING TO THE UK!!!
Electronic Travel Authorization Required For UK NEAR and Soon to be in EFFECT:
The UK Government introduced a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for visitors, including Canadians and Americans, who don’t currently need a visa for short stays.
This new system is part of efforts to improve border security and prevent misuse of the UK immigration system. Canadians, U.S. residents and other non-Europeans have been able to apply for an ETA since 27NOV, 2024 and ALL travellers will need it to travel to the UK from 08JAN, 2025.
The ETA costs £10 (close to CAD $18) and allows multiple visits to the UK for up to six months at a time. It will be valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
The easiest way to apply is through the UK ETA app. Most applications will be processed within three working days, but sometimes it may take a little longer.
Everyone, including babies and children, will need an ETA and you can apply for others as well. The ETA will be required for all visits including just transiting through the UK.WestJet Alters Rewards Program; New Spend Level and Boarding Changes
WestJet is introducing major changes to its rewards program.
The biggest change for most members is an adjustment to the amount of spend needed to reach Silver, Gold and Platinum status. Currently, it takes $3,000 in spend to reach Silver status, $5,000 for Gold, and $8,000 for Platinum. In 2025 that will change to $4,000 for Silver, $6,000 for Gold and $10,000 for Platinum.
One of the other major alterations is a change in priority boarding that will make boarding easier for “road warriors.”
Zone 1 will be reserved exclusively for Platinum members and guests seated in Premium and Business. Previously Zone 1 was set aside for both Platinum and Gold members.
Zone 2 will now be for Gold and Silver members only, as well as guests in Extended Comfort seats.
WestJet also is expanding eligibility for complimentary cabin upgrades by allowing two guests per reservation to be eligible for upgrade to Premium cabins, up from the current rule of one guest per reservation. As well, the Calgary-based airline next year will allow the use of two WestJet-wide companion vouchers on one booking for Gold and Platinum members.
Most changes take effect January 1, but some will take place 15JAN. And officials say more alterations await for later in 2025.
CBSA to adjust service hours at 35 land border crossings in Canada
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announces that it intends to adjust hours of service at 35 land ports of entry across Canada as of 12:01 am (local time) on Jan. 6, 2025.
Today’s announcement, determined in collaboration with the United States, will enhance overall security for both countries. It will allow the CBSA to use its resources more efficiently by deploying officers at busier ports of entry.
This will support the CBSA’s ability to process travellers and goods as well as to manage enforcement activities. The following land ports of entry across Canada will be making changes to their service hours: Alberta: Del Bonita; British Colombia: Cascade, Nelway; Manitoba: Cartwright, Coulter, Crystal City, Goodland, Gretna, Lena, Piney, Snowflake, South Junction, Tolstoi, Windygates, Winkler; Quebec: Chartierville, Clarenceville, Frelighsburg, Herdman, Hereford Road, Highwater, Lacolle Route 221, Lacolle Route 223, Noyan, Trout River; New Brunswick: Bloomsfield, Gillespie Portage, Fosterville, St. Croix; Saskatchewan: Carievale, Estevan Highway, Monchy, Northgate, Oungre, West Poplar River.
U.S. adjusts border service hours
The U.S. is also adjusting service hours at many of its ports of entry. This alignment will also allow both countries to return inadmissible travellers and goods to the other country, which is more difficult when one side of the border is closed while the other remains open.
These adjustments are based on an analysis of operational pressures, peak periods, and services required at the ports of entry, to minimize the impacts on border communities. Almost all of these ports of entry are processing an average of two or less cars or commercial trucks per hour during the hours that will no longer be in operation, and travellers have an alternative border crossing option within a 100 km radius. For more information, visit https://cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/gbi-rgf-eng.html.

Coming Soon! Prepare for 2025 UK ETA Requirement
Starting January 8, 2025, visitors to the United Kingdom from 49 specific countries and territories will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This includes many nationalities that did not previously require a visa or other pre-approval for travel.
UK ETAs will be valid for two years, provided the linked passport remains valid for the ETA's duration. If you get a new passport or your passport expires within two years of the ETA being issued, a new ETA will be required.
EU delays Entry-Exit System rollout, considers ‘phased’ approach
The EU has once again delayed the rollout its new electronic border control system after Germany, France and the Netherlands warned the bloc’s central IT infrastructure is not ready.
In a meeting of EU interior ministers, Johansson said the commission does not yet have a new timeline for the start of EES, but that it is now considering "a phased approach… not a big bang of all border crossing points at the same time".
The decision comes after Germany, France and the Netherlands last month expressed readiness concerns regarding a lack of testing of the system in the field.
A German government spokesperson this week told Reuters that the three countries were not ready because the "necessary stability and functionality of the EES central system to be provided by the EU agency EU-Lisa [which manages major IT infrastructure projects] is not yet in place".
UK transport operators last month were also reportedly briefed by government officials to expect delays to the previously announced November rollout.
EES is a biometric system which will use digital photographs and fingerprints for registering travellers from non-EU countries, including the UK, when they cross the EU’s external border. It will apply to both short-stay visa holders and visa-exempt travellers.
Implementation of the system has suffered a series of delays in the last couple of years, largely due to technical problems. Earlier this year, London’s mayor Sadiq Khan warned the EES would cause “chaos” for passengers on Eurostar services due to a lack of readiness. The UK government has since committed to providing £10.5 million in funding to help prevent “excessive” queues at key borders.
EES is the first step towards the digitalization of EU borders, and must be in force prior to the introduction of the ETIAS travel system for non-EU visitors, which is due to go live in the first half of 2025.
ETIAS will require visitors from 60 visa-free countries, including the UK, to obtain a new electronic travel authorization to enter 30 European countries. The fee for ETIAS will be €7 for those aged 18 to 70 and it will be valid for three years.
Similarly, the UK’s own Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) scheme – which already applies to nationals of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE – will be expanded in two phases next year and, by April 2025, will apply to all visitors currently not requiring a visa.
Uber Introduces Black-Car Experience for Corp. Customers
Uber's corporate-focused division Uber for Business has introduced a new ride type designed to meet a growing need the company sees from its business travellers.
Dubbed Uber Business Black, the service "reimagines" the traditional black-car experience, according to Uber.
Perks include luxury vehicles like the Mercedes G-Class or Rivian R1S; extra time for pick-ups; and on-time pick-up protection—Business Black riders will be issued Uber Cash if a driver isn't matched "in a timely manner," or is late for a pick-up starting at five minutes. How much extra time is allotted depends on whether the ride was reserved or on demand. Note, though, that there is an Uber Black grace period of five minutes for non-airport pickups and two minutes for airport pick-ups before a per-minute wait fee is applied. The fee varies by market.
In addition to the on-time pick-up protection, where Business Black differs from Uber Black is customers or executive assistants can use flexible scheduling with Uber Reserve to schedule Uber Business Black rides in advance or use the Uber app to request a black car on demand; there is a dedicated 24/7 customer support line for up to 72 hours post-ride versus the 24 hours for Uber Black; and receipts are delivered via email once a ride is completed, or if expense integration is enabled, receipts will be uploaded to the user's expense provider, according to Uber.
"Uber Business Black is designed to improve the business travel experience and provide much-needed peace of mind," Uber for Business global general manager Josh Butler said in a statement. "The new ride type combines the luxury and comfort executives need to unwind between meetings with the flexibility and convenience of Uber to ensure a smoother, more reliable experience."
Uber introduced Uber Business Comfort in mid-2023, and since then the company noted that more than half of all active Uber for Business riders have opted for premium trips such as Business Comfort, Comfort Electric, Black or Reserve. "Business riders have made it clear: they want enhanced support, comfort and reliability when traveling for work," Uber said.
Do you know why Smiling in Passport Photos Is a No-Go?
As a frequent business traveler, you know that passport photos are crucial for smooth travel. But did you know that smiling in your passport photo can cause delays or even rejection?
Many travellers don't realize that a neutral expression is required —
no smiles, frowns, or raised eyebrows. A smile can distort facial features, which could affect identification and cause issues with your passport application.
Please contact your travel team and client service representative if you require any additional information.

NEWS FLASH
NEW Procedures for Entering the U.K and Europe
There are some important changes regarding entry procedures for Europe and the U.K. Starting soon, travellers will need to be aware of three new systems: the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), and the Entry/Exit System (EES).
Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA): The U.K. is rolling out the ETA requirement early 2025 to enhance border security by requiring travellers to provide biometric details and additional information. This digital authorization, linked to the applicant’s passport, will replace the existing Electronic Visa Waiver Scheme and will be extended to travellers from Europe, Canada and the U.S. The ETA will be required for short stays and transits, but not for Irish nationals or those with existing visas or permissions.
The UK plans to extend its Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) program to incoming travellers from Canada, the U.S. and Europe by 2025. The British government confirmed last week that non-Europeans will need an ETA for UK travel beginning 08JAN 2025, while Europeans will need one starting 02APR. The plan requires tourists to gain permission to enter the country as part of plans to fully digitize UK borders by 2025, Euro News reports.
Non-Europeans can initiate the application process on 27NOV, while Europeans can do so starting from 05MAR. Travellers have to apply for an ETA before their trip at a cost of 10 British pounds (roughly CAD$18). The ETA allows multiple trips to the U.K. for stays of up to six months at a time over two years, or until the holder's passport expires.
European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS):
New visa scheme for non-EU nationals, Applies to Schengen area, EFTA and microstates
The EU is introducing ETIAS in mid- 2025 to strengthen its border security, by digitally screening and tracking travellers entering and leaving European Union (EU) countries. ETIAS is for visitors from countries that are not currently part of the EU. It will apply to travel to all current EU Schengen member states plus any future members. It will also cover entry to European Free Trade Association (EFTA) members Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, and to European microstates with open borders including Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City.
Travel Authorization – NOT a VISA - ETIAS is a visa-waiver system requiring a €7 per person fee and additional security checks. It will be mandatory for citizens of countries that currently do not need a visa to enter the EU. The ETIAS is not a visa; rather it is a visa- waiver.
The ETIAS will act as a travel authorization for travellers not requiring a visa to visit Europe. It will simply demand additional security checks before permitting entry to the EU. A valid ETIAS authorization does not guarantee entry.
An ETIAS will be mandatory for citizens of non-EU countries who do not currently need a visa to visit the EU. People from as many as 60 countries will in future need to apply for an ETIAS. Citizens from countries on an approved list, which includes Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the U.K. and the U.S., will be able to apply for the ETIAS a minimum of 96 hours before expected travel.
In the case of the U.K, the ETIAS will be required for British citizens, as well as for British nationals (Overseas), British Overseas Territories citizens (BOTC), British overseas citizens (BOC), British protected persons (BPP) and British subjects (BS).
Anyone required to have an approved ETIAS, who arrives in the EU without one, will be turned away at the border or will be denied boarding at the departure airport/port. Applicants still waiting for a decision on their ETIAS will also not be allowed to enter the EU. However, it seems that anyone entering an ETIAS country by land or by rail, will initially not require authorization. EU nationals and persons with a residence permit, card or document issued by any EU country will be exempt from ETIAS.
ETIAS Applications
Because of delays to the EES Entry-Exit System (see below), which needs to be operational before ETIAS can be implemented, ETIAS has itself been subject to a series of delays. It is not now expected to be operational until mid-2025, while further postponement cannot be ruled out. After its eventual initial launch, travellers should enjoy a transitional period of at least six months, where ETIAS will not be mandatory for travel. This will give the EU time to iron out any operational issues. There will also be a separate grace period of at least six months, which applies only to those travellers visiting the EU for the first time since the end of the transitional period. ETIAS applications may only be made online using either the official ETIA website or the official mobile app. This should take less than 10 minutes, with a decision typically provided within 96 hours or less.
Applicants will need a machine-readable or electronic passport, which will need to be valid for more than three months from the intended day of departure from the EU and be no older than 10 years from the date of issue. Biometric passports should be sufficient for most travellers, but visitors from Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Georgia, Hong Kong S.A.R., Macao S.A.R., Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Taiwan and Ukraine may face some restrictions.
Once issued, the ETIAS will be valid for three years, or until the date of passport expiry (whichever comes first). It can be used for stays of up to 90 days in a 180-day period.
Entry/Exit System (EES)
As of November 10, the EES will automate the registration of non-EU nationals each time they cross an external EU border. This system will replace manual passport stamping, providing more accurate data on border crossings and helping to detect overstays. The EES will require biometric passports and will record personal and travel information.
It will cover both short-stay visa holders and visa-exempt travellers, i.e., those who do not need a visa to stay for a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period.
Affected travellers will need a biometric passport to use the EES. The EES will not apply to:
• Nationals of European countries using the EES, including Bulgaria and Romania, as well as Croatia, Cyprus and Ireland
• Non-EU nationals holding residence cards/permits, and who are immediately related to an EU national or a non-EU national allowed to travel throughout Europe like an EU citizen
• Non-EU nationals arriving as part of an intra-corporate transfer or for the purposes of research, study/education, training, voluntary service and au-pairing
• Holders of residence permits and long-stay visas
• Nationals of Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City
• Anyone exempt from cross-border checks or holding local border traffic permits
• Anyone holding a Facilitated Rail Transit Document or Facilitated Transit Document
The EES will record an individual’s name, type of travel document, biometric data (fingerprints and facial images, which could be done in advance using self-service systems at some border crossing points) and the date and place of entry and exit. It will also record any refusals of entry into the EU. The European Commission (EC) claims the EES will fully respect fundamental rights and data protection.
The EES will replace the existing system of manually stamping passports, which is time consuming, fails to provide reliable data on border crossings and is less effective at detecting travellers exceeding the maximum duration of their authorized stay. The EES should also be more effective in identifying cases of document and identity fraud.
Genuine arrivals from third countries should benefit from faster border crossings, particularly since the introduction of the EES will facilitate wider adoption of self-service systems.
The EES was expected to be operational by the end of May 2023. The EU Commissioner for Home Affairs has now officially confirmed November 10, 2024, as the launch date.
More information about EES can be found on the dedicated Entry/Exit System website.
Air Canada Pilots Okay New Agreement; Strike Threat Over
Air Canada pilots have approved a contract deal that avoids what would have a highly disruptive and damaging strike. The Air Line Pilots Association on October 10, 2024 announced that the tentative deal reached last month between the union and AC management was finally approved. Air Canada said it welcomes the result.
Air Canada as our major carrier in Canada and thousands of travellers affected by this labour dispute that became public in early August also created disruption to Travel Management Companies and their customers alike. TTI did all possible to notify and monitor the status of these actions as best as able during this unsettling time. This in turn has also created a back log of duplicate bookings, many changes and re-work to secure travel plans for our customers.
As a result of the delayed negotiations between Air Canada and Unions, there is a backlog of refunds.
Refunds are expected to be credited back to original form of payment between 8-12 weeks from date of cancellation.
We understand the impact this has and are aligned. We appreciate your understanding and support.ArriveCAN, Saves you Time - Customs and Immigration using “Advance Declaration”

CATSA’s Multi-Year Plan to Improve Airport Screening
The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) has announced plans to gradually implement computed tomography (CT) technology with 3D imaging at security screening checkpoints in various airports across Canada over the next several years. CATSA says the CT technology uses advanced 3D images to help screening officers better detect explosives and other threats. This means permitted liquids (under 100 mL), medical devices, and large electronics can be left in carry-on luggage during screening for travellers. “It's great to see this innovative use of technology in action. This will make security screening more effective and improve the passenger experience for Canadians and tourists in our airports across Canada," said Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Transport.
The first full installation of the new CT technology is at VANCOUVER's new ABC security checkpoint. In the fall of 2024, more airports will receive CT equipment, with installations continuing for several years. CATSA said it's working with its screening contractors and air travel partners "to ensure effective security and excellent service" as CT technology is rolled out across the country. September 2024 Air Canada Update
As your Travel Management Partner and in support of the current status relating to Air Canada’s potential pilot strike, we wanted to provide a further follow
up. More on this is also in the link below with Article sent via ACTA.
Air Canada as the country’s major airline the likelihood of a potential strike is quite significant affecting 1000+ flights and over 100,000 or more travellers per day.
The Government of Canada at this stage shared it will not mandate pilots to avoid striking. Elections are fast approaching and unfortunately there is also the political side that is affecting how this situation will unfold.
As we get closer to deadline date of September 17th it will be more difficult to make any changes to any existing reservations. Other carriers are already seeing increasing loads and space is becoming more and more limited.
As shared with many of your travellers during this time, Air Canada is offering a re-protection policy that includes refunding if required.
The Goodwill policy – see Link below for more details:
https://mcusercontent.com/81c12cae14a13357797fa0045/files/db4547be-acfe-db9a-d7fe-241dcd22bf25/24aug27_Goodwill_AC_Labour_Action_EN.pdf
This policy does come with parameters and re-booking windows.Tickets issued on or before August 27th are eligible.
Original Travel dates between September 15 – 23 are eligible
Eligible re-booking windows September 8-14th and September 24th to November 30th.
The Pilots Association must provide notice of strike action 72 hours prior, however this could be announced over next weekend.
TTI is committed to assisting all of our customers with their changes or refunds as needed. It is the passengers decision to either re-protect, refund or stay the course in the event that there may not be a strike.
We did want to share that any last minute changes in the event of a strike will then be under new rules and policy as directed by Air Canada, making the current goodwill policy no longer in effect.
We anticipate higher than usual call volumes, longer wait times and responses to emailed requested.
As a result, TTI have alerted our Emergency After- Hours Teams that in the case of a strike clients, callers and travellers are able to contact them directly during all hours of the day including regular working hours.
We are hopeful that decisions will be made soon, the strike will not occur and based on the recent article today from ACTA – they are still in talks.

Canada Border Services – Potential Strike
Unionized employees of the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) could go on strike as early as June 6 if negotiations with management slated for June 3-5 fail to produce an agreement. CBSA employees are seeking increased pay and improved benefits. According to the Customs and Immigration Union (CIU), over 96 percent of the agency's workers have voted in favor of a strike during early June; nevertheless, labour leaders have yet announced an exact date for the start of such an action. Unless averted, the industrial action will likely cause delays clearing customs at land, air, and maritime border entry points nationwide. Since 90 percent of Canadian border agents are classified as essential personnel and, therefore, are prohibited from suspending work during labour disputes, the strike probably will not be crippling. However, significant slow-downs could still occur if CBSA officers engage in a work-to-rule action in lieu of a full walk-out.WestJet - Fare Option To Be Aware Of

Etihad Launches Abu Dhabi Stopover Program | Business Travel News
Essential Tips for Napping at the Airport During Extended LayoversMost international travelers will agree: There are few things as annoying and inconvenient as a long layover. You know the type, right? Layovers that feel long enough to bore the daylights out of you... but not long enough to actually force you to leave the airport — especially when said layover is in the middle of the night or in the early hours of the morning. Left standing there, stuck between home and your destination, the question of how to spend your time and what to do with all these tedious hours comes up.
